Taipei Recap: New Year's Dinner

We got back from our Thailand trip just in time to countdown the new year. It took us the rest of New Year's Eve and part of New Years to feel fully rested.

The only thing we did on the first day of 2013 was go out for a family dinner at Mitsui, our family's favorite Japanese restaurant.

We had a private room but I think the main dining room is wonderful too. We always order their full course meal instead of ordering a la carte.

Missing my sister or else this family portrait would be complete.

Lobster salad! Everything was delicious. It's becoming a tradition for my boyfriend to take the corn for himself. Last year, he took it when I wasn't looking. This year, I offered it to him and he took it.
In exchange, I get to eat the lobster's head (more like sucking the essence).

Sashimi platter.

They brought the live crab to our table for us to see before serving it to us two ways: steamed and broiled.

Foie Gras over rice and fish roe

Sea Urchin over grated raw Naigaimo

Geoduck Hot Pot

Grilled Crab Legs

My dad and boyfriend drank sake during our meal.

After dinner, we had a choice of coffee or tea.
I chose coffee since I love how they present it.

For dessert, I chose a red bean paste pancake served with fresh fruit.
Other options included red bean soup with mochi, sesame ice cream or matcha ice cream.

Our first dinner of 2013 was a fabulous one. I hope this sets the tone for the rest of the year!

I would have pardoned the crab.

Seriously, you have done a great job with your fitness.

All restaurants should be so aware of food presentation, don't you think? I love how in Japanese and many Thai restaurants artful food presentation is just the norm; dishes are reasonably sized and beautiful, and it's all about quality over quantity. And then you go in American restaurants and there's like a steak the size of a twelve inch dinner plate and potatoes and gravy covering everything, and it's all about quantity over quality. Sigh.
